Principal Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Works directly with the VFX Supervisor to determine and advise technical solutions; Directs and supervises compositing artists in the completion of final shots.

  • Advises production department on compositor assignments, scheduling, dailies workflow and standards

  • Responsible for compositing templates and standards, compositing workflow, organization, and general methodology, shot continuity, grain continuity, and compositing quality control

  • Responsible for setting up the color pipeline

  • Will be expected to spot check individual comps of other artists and evaluate quality and efficiency of teams work

  • May also fill the role of Lead Compositor

Education, Experience and Skills Required:

  • At least 5 years live action visual effects compositing experience

  • Excellent technical knowledge of all aspects of Color pipelines (log/linear/srgb/film-look-ups etc.)

  • After Effects knowledge required

  • Shake, Nuke, Digital Fusion all a big plus

  • Will work closely with the Senior FX TD’s to use pre-defined set-ups and apply them to shots.

  • Will be trained to work in Flowline, our Academy Award winning, proprietary simulation software.

  • Great opportunity to be mentored by Senior FX TD’s and grow to higher level position

  • Work on complex visual effects animation problems such as realistic fluids, fire (smoke, etc.), debris, cloth and hair

  • Excellent skills in Photoshop and BodyPaint 3D, open to other programs

  • Good knowledge of the basic principles of 2D texture projections in 3ds Max, Maya or similar 3D application

  • Technical experience in photography or lighting with an emphasis on color and composition

  • UV mapping workflow experience a plus

  • Believable animations of large-scale objects interacting w/ simulations and camera movements, as well as debris animation

  • Designing an animated environment that includes backgrounds, sets and objects

  • Pipeline planning, execution, and support

Education, Experience and Skills Required:

  • At least 2 years of experience in VFX animation

  • Expert knowledge of 3DS Max a plus.

PIPELINE DEVELOPER 

Principal Duties and Responsibilities:

Works with the Head of Technology to architect and develop production tools and supporting modules in a Max and/or Mel scripting language environment.  Primary responsibilities include automating the use of Flowline, our proprietary, Academy Award-winning simulation software -- connecting it to our asset management system and creating an optimized workflow according to long-term and production-specific needs.

Education, Experience and Skills Required:

  • Design, build, and maintain software using a variety of languages, tools, and 3rd-party packages

  • BS or MS in Computer Science or equivalent

  • Excellent Max and/or Mel scripting experience in a Windows environment

  • Additional C++ experience a plus as well as basic knowledge of various 3D packages API’s

  • Knowledge of relational database design and implementation also a plus

  • Experience automating complex processes of scenes that consist of a large number of assets. 

  • Development experience with digital media formats, media viewers and media architectures as related to the computer animation and/or visual effects production.

  • Familiarity with computer graphics application software, e.g. Maya, Shake, 3ds Max, etc.

  • Understanding and experience with client-server and other multi-tiered system environments.

  • Must have prior VFX production experience with in depth understanding workflow from start to finish including but not limited to production and delivery deadlines.

SYSTEMS ADMINISTRATOR

The Systems Administrator builds infrastructure solutions to Scanline VFX’s technology needs in a variety of areas, including: storage networking; physical networking; render farm management; name services; desktop support; and desktop build and software management.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities:

Education, Experience and Skills Required:

  • Maintaining and extending a multiple thousand core and multiple hundred terabyte production environment

  • Minimum 2-4 years in related roll
  • BS degree in Computer Science, Engineering or other technical field
  • Experience administrating multiple operating systems, including Windows, Mac OS and Unix
  • Experience with distributed filesystems like Lustre, Isilon, etc., a plus
  • Experience with one or more administrative scripting languages (Perl, Python, Bash, etc.)
  • Familiarity with networking and distributed computing, including network file systems, routing and subnetting
  • Fluency with common network protocols and their implementations and management: DNS, NFS, directory services, SSH/SSL and security protocols
  • Experience with performance analysis and tuning of operating systems and networks
  • Programming experience in a procedural or functional language a plus
  • Some knowledge of 2D & 3D graphics tools, (e.g. After Effects, 3ds Max, Maya, etc.) a plus

I/O Technical Coordinator

This position will provide IO support for one or more high-profile feature projects at Scanline VFX.  The IO Technical Coordinator will work under the supervision of the VFX Producer and is responsible for preparing all appropriate digital assets inbound to production and outbound to vendors.  Individuals applying for this position should have a high attention to detail, strong organizational skills, and a flexible working schedule.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Assists in all sending and receiving of digital assets for the project

  • Initiates the editorial pipeline from the client to the artist and involves thorough tracking and documentation

  • Pre-processing of digital assets in compliance with the show’s technical pipeline specification. This could include creating dailies, QT’s, low-res proxies, applying specialized LUTs, format conversions, naming conventions, protocol.

  • Frequent communication with appropriate show personnel throughout the duration of the project regarding the status of sent and received assets

  • Effective communication with Client side counterpart

Education, Experience, and Skills Required:

  • Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent preferred

  • Previous experience in similar role handling large-scale IO projects within a visual effects studio preferred

  • Excellent working knowledge of Graphical FTP Clients.

  • Experience editing with Avid, Final Pro or some other editing software.

  • Understanding and experience with handling EDL required

  • Basic experience with After Effects, / Shake, / Nuke, / and/or Fusion a plus

  • Experience with Dailies system like Nucoda a plus

  • Strong Knowledge of color space required

  • Strong organizational and communication skills, as well as a high attention to detail

RENDER WRANGLER
 
The Render Wrangler is responsible for maintaining maximum render farm utilization and throughput.


Principal Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Prioritize show demands under changing conditions and production deadlines

  • Manage multiple thousand CPU’s that are simulating rendering high-end VFX data

  • Ensure that overnight renders are given correct resources based on relative priorities

  • Diagnose farm problems and assist with the debugging of common technical issues

  • Document common errors and assist artists with basic technical fixes

  • Respond swiftly to unexpected events, taking appropriate corrective action and notifying affected producers and artists

  • Perform comprehensive quality-checks on dailies movies

Education, Experience and Skills Required:

  • 1 year experience in a related role

  • BA or BS degree in Computer Technology/Artistry or related field

  • Experience with Windows or Unix networks, in a support, maintenance, or admin capacity

  • Experience in film, VFX, or game graphics production environments

  • Some knowledge of 2D & 3D graphics tools, e.g. After Effects, 3D Studio Max, Maya, etc. a plus

  • Shell scripting & basic programming skills a plus

  • Excellent communication and organization skills

  • Strong troubleshooting & debugging skills

  • Ability to multitask, staying on course despite interruptions

  • Flexibile schedule a necessity, as shifts have staggered starts to ensure 24 hour coverage.

  • There occasionally may be weekend work

  • Ability to work independently (key for evening shifts) and in group settings
